ARGOS, IN. – Once the LaVille High School Girls Soccer team found its way through the initial 10 minutes to start the Class 1A Argos Sectional semifinal match with Rochester, the Lancers played a bit more comfortable.
The Lancers picked up two first-half goals – one by Mackenzie Stephenson and one by Kyle Gorka – that helped coach Daniel Pleninger’s squad settle down and gain some confidence.
“It took us alittle to get going,” said Pleninger. “But once we started intercepting the ball and we got that first goal we were able to relax and play a little more together.”
Stephenson’s goal, ironically, helped the Lancers pick up the offensive intensity.
Kyle Gorka was on the receiving end of a pass from Lauren Dove to make it 2-0 and the LaVille defense took the match from that point.
“We just started making some plays,” said Pleninger. “Generally the first five to 10 minutes each team is just trying to find themselves. If you can move past that point have have a chance to make plays.”
LaVille goalie Trynitie Cox was able to hold off 10 Rochester shot attempts anad the defense was able to keep the ball away from the Zebra offense with ball-control to advance to the sectional championship Saturday against Argos.
LaVille dropped a 2-1 decision on September 19 to then #6-ranked Argos.
Kylee Platz, Makenna Tribbey and Abby Leonhard were solid on the back line. Kylie Gorka, Emalie Franz and Lauren Dove held their own in the midfield fending off the Dragon attack.
