GOSHEN, IN. – Cold shooting proved to be the difference as the LaVille High School varsity girl’s basketball team dropped a 39-32 decision to Westview at the Class 2A Sectional #35 at Fairfield High School Friday.
The Lancers took an early 2-0 lead as senior Trynity Cox converted a pair of free throws at the 6:37 mark of the first quarter. Cox then made it 4-0 Lancers after hauling in an assist by Natalie Gonzalez just 30-second later and converting inside the paint.
Westview battle back to tie the game at 4-4 and the two squads battled back and forth to combined for four lead changes and three ties before the first quarter closed at 10-10.
In the second quarter, the Lancers just could not get shots to fall as coach Daniel Pleninger’s squad went 0-for-5 from the field in the period and committed six turnovers.
The Lancers struggled on 3-of-17 from the field in the first half, yet trailed by just nine points at the break.
The Westview lead wavered between 10 and 12 points for much of the second half before a late-game rally by the Lancers narrowed the gap to seven at 33-26 when Allison Medors hit a bucket in the paint off an assis from Gonzalez. The Warriors, however, would convert on the next possession to increase the lead to nine once again.
Medors once again hit a pair of free throws to make it 37-30 with 1:33 left in the fourth quarter. After Cox picked up a steal, the Lancers continued to peck away at the Westview lead. Cox was fouled going to the basket and hit a pair of charity tosses to make it 37-32 with 1:26 left. Pleninger’s crew, however, ran out of time as the buzzer sounded.
Cox played her final game in a LaVille Basketball uniform and led the offense with 13 points and snagged 11 rebounds for a double-double to end her career. Allison Medors had seven points and six rebounds, while Lucy Sherk chipped in with five points and five reounds.
LaVille finished the game shooting just 23-percent from the floor, including 0-for-10 from beyond the arc.
Gloria Miller led a balanced Westview offense with 12 points before going down with an ankle injury in the second quarter.
LaVille finished the season with a 2-23 overall record and graduates Trynitie Cox, Natalie Gonzalez, Elena Lindke, and manager Karly Unruh.
