ELKHART, IN. – The junior varsity basketball team traveled to North Side Gym in Elkhart, IN., to face Elkhart Memorial Saturday in a non-conference high school game.
LaVille got off to a hot start as the Lancers found the range from 3-point territory in the first quarter. Austin Belknap and Evan Wilfing drained 3-pointers to give the Lancers a 17-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The host Chargers, however, found their own hot shooter as Amari Williams hit the scoring column for 10 of the EMHS points and a 33-28 halftime lead.
The Lancers had scoring opportunities in the third quarter, however, could not finish as the Chargers began to pull away. The Elkhart hosts outscored LaVille 11-5 in the quarter to open a 44-33 advantage.
LaVille made a strong fourth quarter rally, closing to within three points late in the game. Wilfing popped a pair treys, while Dawson Beam hit a triple to help close the gap.
Erick Nocentelli converted on 6-of-6 from the free throw line to help lift the Chargers past the Lancers. EMHS outscored the Lakeville guests 13-2 from the line, which was a difference especially in the second half.
LaVille’s Austin Belknap led all scorers with 16 first-half points. Joe Cruz came off the bench to add nine points and Wilfing chipped in with eight.
The Lancers get right back to the court Monday, January 20, as LaVille hosts the 55th annual TCU Bi-County Basketball Tournament. LaVille will play host to a JV girl-boy doubleheader against Triton. The JV girls will open play at 6:30 p.m., followed by the JV boys.
