Boys Junior Varsity Basketball, Boys Varsity Basketball · Basketball Headed To NJSP For Crucial HNAC Game

NORTH JUDSON, IN. -It’s GAMEDAY for LaVille Basketball!

When the 2019-2020 high school basketball season got started, several Hoosier North Athletic Conference coaches mentioned that the HNAC would be as wide-open as they recalled since the HNAC inception some five years ago

The LaVille Basketball team will begin the 2020 portion of the schedule with Hoosier North Athletic Conference rival North Judson-San Pierre.

The junior varsity game is set to tip at 6:30 p.m., with the varsity to follow.

North Judson-San Pierre leads the series 18-11 since 1993-94.  LaVille Head Coach Michael Edison is 7-4 all-time against the Blue Jays, including seven straight wins in the series.  The last time LaVille lost to NJSP was a December 23, 2011, 67-39 decision at North Judson-San Pierre High School.

According to Edison, the Blue Jays have the HNAC’s leading scorer, along with a few other offensive threats to contend with.

“North Judson is a high powered offense and has one of the leading scorers in the area in Cooper Hochstedler,” said Edison.  “He can spot up and shoot from 3 point range from deep and he can also create his own shots off the dribble.  He is great at drawing fouls and gets a lot of his points from the foul line.  We need to make him earn his points without bailing him out by fouling him.  Our goal must be to try to get the ball out of his hands.  The other problem is that he is a good passer and North Judson has other good playmakers and shooters as well.

“Payton Cox is a penetrator and makes other people around him better,” continued Edison.  “Ty Schumacher is a shooter and creator and is a big part of their offense.”

According to Edison, North Judson presses some and also runs a lot of 2-3 zone.  The Blue Jays like to push the tempo both offensively and defensively as they like a lot of possessions.  Controlling the tempo of the game will be a big key for the Lancers.

LaVille is tied with Knox atop the HNAC standings, but North Judson-San Pierre is just a half-game behind.

“We must get the shots we want and make sure those are high percentage,” explained Edison.  “Challenging their shooters on the perimeter will be another big key to the game.

“Like always, we just want to be as focused and prepared as we can be as we go into battle,” continued Edson.  “We want to be as tough to beat as possible and we want to challenge every opponent.”

Finishing the 2019 portion of the schedule at 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the HNAC has been a plus for the Lancers, but Edison says that its not been a one-man show.

“I feel like a vast majority of the players on the team have shown some major improvements this year,” said Edison.  ” As a team we are trying to get better every day and the guys are really starting to figure out their roles and adapt well to them.”

Bobby Good leads LaVille’s offense at a 14.7 point per game clip.  Conner Wieczorek adds 10.3, Austin Dove 7.1, and Jimmy Fischer 6.6.  Andrew Dill has come off the bench to chip in with 7.3 ppg in about 20 minutes of play.

Hochstedler leads NJSP with 26.3 ppg and a little over 10 rebounds per contest.  Schumacher tosses in 11.1, Blayne Wilcox 9.8, and Cox 8.2 ppg and 4.4 boards per game.
