Boys Varsity Track · Track Steps Up Big To Win First HNAC Boys Track Title

LAKEVILLE, IN. – It has been quite some time that LaVille has hosted a track meet at Lancer Field, let alone a conference championship.

For first time in school history LaVille hosted a conference track championship and came away with a Hoosier North Athletic Conference trophy.

“This is our first HNAC title in boys track,” said LaVille coach Kathe Beehler. “Its huge. They went out and fought for it and they deserved it.  To win it at home and for kids that have not had home meets for so long, it was huge for those boys.”

LaVille finished with 119.5 points, including 46.5 points in the field events.  The Lancers finished with two field event placements for points in all events except shot put. Luke Beehler was the long jump champion with a leap of 22-feet, 1/2-inch.

In the running events, the  Lancers added more balance to the score sheet. LaVille grabbed a 1-2 finish in the 400m dash. Ethan Yoder hit the tape in 52.52, exactly one second ahead of Nick Felke for a big 18 points.

As the night continued, the running events finished before the throwing events, so those points became important to each team.

“It was everyone that had to step up and we had people step up big,” explained Beehler.  “That is what resulted in a championship. I knew it was going to be tight and we needed to come out and score where we could score. And, we did that.

“It felt like it went right down to the wire,” continued Beehler.  “We were down by one point going into the 4 x 400 relay. I told them they had to win. I told them that they were still throwing so we needed points. That is pretty much what it came down to. The 4 x 400 and the points we were able to get in the throwing events.”

Beehler credited RJ Gentner, who “PRd and stepped up as a senior.  That was huge.”

Following the 4 x 400 relay conference championship run, Beehler commented what a special group they have become.

“The 4 x 4 is a special team,” concluded Beehler.  “That is the last event every meet and I know with those four boys together on the track, we always have a chance. The work ethic, the practice, the mental toughness, and the drive they have to win. They are special.”
