LAKEVILLE, IN. – After having seven days between games; LaVille had a chance to work on individual and team items.
Saturday, the Lancers were able to put some of that work to good use in a 41-34 Hoosier North Athletic Conference victory against Caston.
“It was so awesome to get our first HNAC win and on senior day!” said LaVille coach Corey Duncan. “The last week we have really stressed getting our arms in the passing lanes, one pass away, and putting pressure on the dribbler. They brought it into the game today.”
The Lancer defense held Caston below its scoring average, along with leading scorer Jordan Clingler.
“I think defense is one of our strengths,” said Duncan. “At the beginning of the season, we struggled with rotations, but repetitions with drills, we have greatly improved.
“Clingler did most of her scoring while Julia (Hall) was in foul trouble,” continued Duncan. “Julia did a great job not letting her get position on the block to make an easy move. We also did a nice job blocking her out so she didn’t get second chance points.”
LaVille got off to a quick start, canning three 3-point field goals to take 13-7 lead. Natalie Gonzalez canned a pair of long-range jumpers, while Kelsey Aschenbrenner added another.
“We have really talked to the kids about taking the open shot,” explained Duncan. “It’s better than a turnover. The girls responded. We set some mini goals and that helped keep our focus.”
The Lakeville hosts continued with a strong second quarter to take a 26-15 halftime lead.
Caston tried to make a run in the second half narrowing the gap to six points, but the Lancers held off the Comets to pick up the victory.
“The 3-point shooting gave us some confidence early,” said Duncan. “We came out flat the second half, but going in at halftime ahead gave us enough to seal the victory.
Hall led a trio of double-figure scorers with 14 points. Gonzalez added 12 points, and Trynitie Cox collected a double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
“We’ve really been correcting Natalie hard in practice,” said Duncan. “She responded and took it into the game. Julia played strong in the post and limited their post player’s touches when she wasn’t on the bench in foul trouble.
“The improvement is coming,” continued Duncan. “All season despite our turnovers and losses the kids have played hard from start to finish.”
LaVille improves to 4-12 overall and 1-3 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference.
The Lancers play host to Class 2A #5 North Judson Tuesday, then hit the road to Knox on Friday. The Redskins lead the HNAC with a 5-0 mark and have won their last 11 straight games.
