Boys Varsity Soccer, Girls Varsity Volleyball · Unruh, Cox Selected October Athlete Of The Month

LAKVILLE, IN. – After nominations from fall head coaches, and an open vote on, LaVille volleyball player Karly Unruh and LaVille boy’s soccer player Rilye Cox have been selected October Athlete of the Month.

The monthly honor is sponsored by the LaVille Athletic Department and Lapaz Lions Club.

Unruh, a junior, played middle hitter and blocker on the LaVille volleyball team this fall.

“The 2018 volleyball season was one of the more difficult seasons,” said Unruh.  “Our team had to face many injuries and we had to do a lot of adjusting throughout the season. This was definitely a growing year. We had outstanding underclassmen step in to fill roles on the court that we needed.   The team has some amazing players that demonstrated amazing skills.

“As for me personally I had to overcome an injury,” continued Unruh.  “My stats were not as high as I would have liked them to be. However, I always gave everything I had to the team. Playing or not I always tried to encourage every girl on the court. Keeping a positive attitude on and off the court will help our team so much.”

Unruh was fifth on the team in kills and fourth in kill percentage.  She also led the team in blocks and scrapped her way to 42 digs defensively.

“Being nominated for this showed me that even if I did not have the best stats or if I was not the star player that nothing goes unrecognized,” explained Unruh.  “Being selected is an honor. The volleyball team has so many outstanding athletes and for my coach to pick me is so amazing and I am so grateful.”

Playing middle hitter and middle blocker is a lot of movement at the net, according to Unruh. “You are a huge part of the defense.  Blockers are the first line of defense. Middle blocker goes to all sides to help the side blockers. To be an outside or right side blocker is to set the block.”

Unruh says that even though her junior year did not go as well as she hoped, she is very excited to get back to the gym and work on her volleyball skills and gear up for her senior year.

Cox, a 6-foot-5 senior, played goalie for the Hoosier North Athletic Conference champion soccer team.

“Soccer season went well,” said Cox.  “We hit a rough stretch where we played really tough teams, and ultimately didn’t end how we wanted it to, but overall we had fun and it was an exciting season. Personally I had a great year because of the connections not only with the players, but the coaches as well.”

Cox finished the season with over 100 keeper saves and was an All-HNAC first-team selection.

“It is a great honor to be nominated by my coach for athlete of the month,” explained Cox.  “But I would like to say, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my defense. We all function as a unit, and they played just as well as I did through the entire year.”

Cox says that being a goalie can, at times, be very boring since some matches there is not a lot of action.  He also said that there are times where I get a lot of action, and when that happens it is very fun and physical.”
