Girls Varsity Volleyball · Volleyball Serving Up A New Season

LAKEVILLE, IN. – As the 2018 IHSAA fall practices begin, LaVille volleyball coach Matt Miller looks to help the Lancers improve on a 9-21 overall mark and 2-5 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference last season.

LHS graduated four-year setter Haley Berger from a year ago, so Miller is looking who will step up to lead LaVille volleyball.

“That’s the million dollar question for us this year,” said Miller.  “Who will be the ones to step up and lead not just our varsity, but, the program as a whole?  Losing Haley Berger, four year starting setter, leaves a huge hole to fill not just in position but her knowledge, competitive drive and leadership.

“I am really hoping that our five seniors (Isabella Kertai, Charlet Kapke, Julia Hall, Emerson Lemberis and Maddie Johnson) will step in and lead the program,” continued Miller.  “Kapke and Kertai should be big for us this year as both have been stat leaders the past couple years but now we need for them to step up and be more vocal in their leadership.  Hall and Johnson have been out all summer due to injuries (along with junior Natalie Gonzalez) and we are a little anxious to see how they do once they are able to return.  Lemberis has been improving during open gyms since being released from her ankle injury she sustained during club play this winter.”

When asked who thinks would be some of his top players, Miller said, “I am not really sure if I can say who will be our top four or five players this year as it could be anyone at this point in time.  There is going to be a lot of competition for starting positions on varsity this year.  The junior and sophomore classes worked hard in the off season and have made some tremendous improvements and are hoping to see some really good things from them this year.  It is entirely possible that we have two or three varsity starters come out of the sophomore class.  And we can not count the freshmen out, there is a good chance that some see varsity time by the end of the season.”

Shauna Fagan is Miller’s new assistant.

LaVille will open the season August 8 at the South Bend Riley scrimmage.
