LAKEVILLE, IN. – Trailing 16-0 and moving into the fourth quarter, the LaVille football team made key plays at crucial times to rally for a 19-16 Class 1A, Sectional #41 victory Friday against Culver Community.
With the victory, the Lancers advanced to the sectional final against Triton Friday Nov. 3.
Triton defeated Winamac, 48-29.
The sectional finale will be played at Lancer Field in Lakeville. Kick off time to be announced.
The Lancers started the scoring when Braxton Sauer forced his way into the end zone from three yards to narrow the gap to 16-6. Sauer also converted the 2-point conversion to make it 16-8 with 9:36 remaining.
On the next LaVille possession, Sauer found Jimmy Fischer for a 64-yard TD pass to close to within 16-14. Jacob Good was the main receiver as Sauer found Good in the end zone for the 2-point and a 16-16 tie with under three minutes left in regulation.
The Lancer ‘D’ forced Culver on a 3-and-out and a punt with 2:08 remaining.
A fine punt return put the Lancers in Cavalier territory at the 43.
Kolby Watts broke free for a 27-yard run to push the ball deep inside the red zone.
Two plays later Figg was called upon to attempt the game-winning field goal.
Figg, kicking against a light wind, had enough leg to convert a 31 yard field goal with 17 seconds left.
The Lancer ‘D’ held the Cavs on the final pass attempt from the LaVille 43 as time ran out.
The Triton victory, along with LaVille’s ‘W’, sets up a rematch from week #2 of the regular season. The Trojans picked up a 22-14 win in Bourbon.
