ELKHART, IN. – The 24th annual Indiana High School Athletic Association boys soccer state tournament is set to begin across the state on Monday October 2. LaVille drew the host Elkhart Christian Academy Eagles in the first match of the Class 1A, Sectional #34 tournament. The LaVille-ECA match begins at 5 pm.
Admission to the sectional is $6 per session or $10 for a sectional pass.
The Lancers and Eagles met on September 14 that ended in a 1-0 ECA victory. Tariku Freeland scored the lone goal in the second half to provide the difference.
“We are extremely excited to get the opportunity to play ECA again,” said LaVille coach Justin Christy. “In our first meeting, we lost 1-0 and we felt that that match was not our best effort. We played very slow that game and didn’t win very many 50/50 balls. Even though we did not play our best we still were able to score a goal which was called back due to a very questionable offsides call. The game should have been 1-0 us in the first half. So it should be a very even matchup and both teams will be ready for the rematch.”
The Lancers finished the regular season at 11-4-1.
“The regular season went very well,” said Christy. “Out of the four losses, we only lost by a total of four goals. Every match that we did not win we competed very well in and had a chance to win.”
Christy feels the Lancer defense has played pretty tough.
“The defense has been a solid unit the entire year,” explained Christy. “We have had the same four starters playing together throughout the season and are completely capable of playing the entire 80 minutes. The most goals the defense has given up the in a match is three and that was to a VERY good Bethany Christian team.”
Senior Jake Anders expects a good match against ECA, “. . . they are a very well disciplined team with great coaching. They pass the ball really well and have kids who can really finish. We have to just play the way we know we can and I believe we will come out on top against them.”
The Lancers finished the season 5-0-1 in the last six matches and won the Hoosier North Athletic Conference championship.
“We brought home our third straight HNAC Conference Championship, and still haven’t lost a match in the HNAC since its creation,” says Anders. “Our defense is playing very well. We have had the same unit of four guys all year and they play very well together. They are one of the most solid defensive units that I’ve ever seen in high school soccer.
“Our offense started off the year slow, but as we approach the postseason we have heated up at the perfect time. We have had 19 goals in the last four matches, including a 10-0 regular season closer on senior night against Tippecanoe Valley. We have a great group of seniors that have led us the entire season. Also the three captains on the team are the most experienced bunch of captains we have had in a long time.”
