EAST CHICAGO, IN. – A pair of LaVille High School wrestlers participated in the IHSAA East Chicago Semi-State Saturday. Anthony Felke participated in the 145-pound weight class, while Alex Cartwright participated in the heavyweight class.
Unfortunately, both were eliminated from state championship contention.
Felke was defeated in the first round by Jason Crary of Munster, 18-2.
“Anthony did okay. His opponent was just better Saturday,” said LaVille coach Mike Bottorff. “Anthony still had a very good season, overall.”
Felke finished 33-7 overall.
Alex Cartwright won his first match, 6-0, over Alex Faulkner of Mishawaka in the heavyweight class. “Alex wrestled well in the first match and was able to do the things he wanted to do, ” said Bottorff.
In the quarterfinal round, Cartwright lost a 4-2 decision in triple overtime to Brandon Streck of Merrillville.
“Alex’s match against the kid from Merrillville went three overtimes,” said Bottorff. “When you get to the last overtime period, it is sudden death. Alex started on top and his opponent received a point with less than seven second left.
“Alex really wrestled well,” continued Bottorff. “We wanted both of our wrestler’s to go to state, but that didn’t happen. Alex has already started coming back in and working for next year.”
Cartwright concluded a fine sophomore season with a 35-4 mark.
