Multiple Teams · LaVille Wrestlers “Improving”; Winamac, Culver Up Next

LAKEVILLE, IN. – The LaVille High School wrestling team may be considered rookies to some, but according to coach Mike Bottorff the Lancers are steadily “improving as the season progresses.”

“For having a young team, we are really doing okay,” said Bottorff of the 10-7 overall record.  “We wrestle eight freshmen and eight sophomores.”

The Lancers have wrestled just two dual meets so far this season – wins over Culver Community and Pioneer.  But, have participated in three varsity invitational’s where the youngsters see more upperclassmen.

“When we take them to the invitational meet’s, we want them to keep improving,” he continued. “The thing I like is that even though they wrestle juniors and seniors, they are not quitting.”

The schedule has been challenging thus far for the small school from Lakeville, IN.

“When you wrestle the schedule we wrestle,” explained Bottorff. “you won’t see too many freshmen and sophomores.”

In the three invitational’s LaVille has participated in, the Lancers have had four weight class champions each time out and, a total of seven different wrestler’s earning the top spot in their respective weight class.

One wrestler that has been a pleasant surprise has been sophomore Alex Cartwright.

“To be 17-0 at this point in the season is real good,” Bottorff said of his heavyweight. We’ve wrestled Jimtown, New Prairie, Michigan City, East Chicago, and Mishawaka Marian, and those are big school’s. Those are challenges.”

Senior Anthony Felke, a 152-pounder, has also been a bright spot.

“Anthony has been doing real good,”  said Bottorff. “He’s 14-3 and lost to three very good opponents.”

LaVille will face Hoosier North Athletic Conference foes Culver Community and Winamac on Tuesday Jan. 3.
