LAKEVILLE, IN. – The LaVille Girls Basketball team is set to open the 2016-17 season Thursday Nov. 4 at Jimtown High School. Thursday’s opener is in Baugo Township. The JV game tips off at 6:00 pm, with the varsity to follow.
The Lancers finished the 2015-16 campaign with a 8 – 15 overall record, including a 5 – 3 mark in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference (HNAC).
“My observation so far this season is that we have improved in several areas from last year,” said second-year coach Corey Duncan. “The players notice it as well. The learning curve is a bit different. Instead of learning an entirely new offense and defense, we can build on what we know and add a few things along the way. We have come so far not only in basketball skills, but in the mental side of the game as well. It’s neat to see the growth, and I hope the fans see the it as well.”
LaVille returns several player’s from a year ago. Mallory Vernon and Jessica Tuttle return for their senior season. Juniors include Haley Berger, Lindsey Aschenbrenner, Nina Sajdak, and Aryn Eash. Sophomores back are Shelfie Zeiger, Kelsey Aschenbrenner, Hannah Filley, and Julia Hall.
“The girls have some lofty goals,” Duncan said. “The goals the players have said they want to accomplish are: win conference, the TCU Bi-County tournament ,and a sectional title. They are all attainable if we get the job done in practice and keep our attitudes positive and mentally strong.
“With 13 of our 15 loses 10 points or under last year, my goal is to finish those close games and come out on top,” she continued. “I also would like to see the players continue having confidence and growing as basketball players.
The Lancers hit the road to Jimtown High School Nov. 4, which gives LaVille the chance tp showcase some changes on the court. According to Duncan, “This summer offensively we pushed the ball up the court and backed it up if we didn’t get anything right away. It was successful for us and am hoping to stick with that style during the season. With our athleticism, defensively we will be primarily pressure man defense. You will also see some trap and possibly some run and jump before the end of the season.”
The first home game will be Tuesday Nov. 8 against rival Bremen. The JV game tips off at 6 pm.
